Viglietti Don Carlo was a faithful secretary to Don Bosco in the last years of the saint. We went everywhere, nursed him, treated him with infinite patience and tenderness to the last moment of death. He has left us a precious treasure in the chronicle written every day of the last four years of the life of our father . Travel, details, anecdotes, words, gestures ... everything is picked up with the fine writing of Don Carlo in taccuini (notebooks) that have been preserved in the Central Archicad and recently have seen the light of the critical edition of the same by the Salesian Historical Institute.
Rereading these days chronic Viglietti, I'm finding quite a few reasons for reflection. On January 28, 1888, days before the death of the saint, the columnist writes:
"Don Bosco is getting worse (...) Today, tonight, tomorrow, continuing to raving frequently. I heard repeated many times: Forward, always forward! ".
The dreamer delusional. And in the final stretch of his life, exhausted and dying, continues to repeat Onward, ever onward! Who knows what I dreamed ... Although it is not hard to imagine in the midst of a thousand companies, facing difficulties and encouraging to all, forward, always forward!
say you die as he has lived. I think of the constants of your entire project: the enthusiasm and tenacity by the mission, by the young, the poor. True reflection of his life, Don Bosco dream until the end with new fronts, with new projects, new frontiers to reach although it has to face hardship.
For us, in times of uncertainty and complexity, the words of Don Bosco are a valuable inheritance. Onward, ever onward. Trusting in the Lord, As one small farmer many years ago walking along the rope suspended between two trees and found in their learning as a tumbler that the secret was to look forward and walk confident that he only says: "You are my God out of you I have no good "(Psalm 16, 2).
Today as yesterday, Don Bosco encourages us to go further. Not to succumb to the difficulties. A look away. A search for new ways to go, sure that God goes before us. The single point of chronic Viglietti is valuable. We rediscover the heart of our father. Passionate Heart, bold, persistent, confident. Excited , because - undoubtedly - full of God.
